Did you know? Summer Vacation was originally implemented because school buildings were uncomfortably hot during the summer months and air conditioning was not affordable like it is now!

Students and teachers alike were unable to concentrate when the temperature rose over the Summer, so implementing an extended break allowed them to avoid the peak temperatures and return to cooler buildings in the Fall. It wasn't only schools that adopted this summer break. Many government offices would also close down in the summer to avoid the heat and some say that the introduction of air conditioning actually helped to prompt the growth of federal bureaucracy as it allowed for longer lawmaking sessions to take place!
